BBQ season is here and we can’t wait for our first over-charred burger! We all know how much fun a BBQ can be, but as a host it can sometimes be stressful. Make your host’s life easier with this ‘how to’ guide to being the perfect BBQ guest!

Bring a dish
The most obvious is still the best thing you can do! Let your host know ahead of time that they don’t need to worry about the pasta salad, or the coleslaw. If a few people take ownership of one side dish your host will have a few less things to buy, and worry about! Here are some easy suggestions:

  • Potato salad
  • Pasta salad
  • Coleslaw
  • Chips and dips
  • Fruit salad
  • Dessert
  • Sauces and condiments

Kiss the cook
Don’t forget to bring the chef a drink and all the ready to cook foods beyond their reach! Manning the grill is a sacred duty, and they won’t leave their post. You should ensure they’re never without a drink and a snack, but whatever you do… don’t hover!

Be the sous chef’s invisible helper
It’s easy for the person staging and exporting all the food from the kitchen to feel left out as sounds of laughter drift in from the garden. Keep your host company by being useful: fetch utensils for the chef, wipe down counters, wash pots, load the dishwasher and sort and empty the bin.

Bring games!
Bring a game or two that kids and adults can enjoy! Jenga, Four-in-a-Row or any of the other classics can be fun after a drink or two and will keep other guests (and kids) entertained to give your host a breather.

Bring a bottle
Take a bottle or two or better yet, enough to share. More importantly take a bottle of something extra nice as a thank you to your host. They will need a drink after all the hard work!

Wrap it up
As the night goes on and the sun sets, guests can get chilly and your host might not have heaps of blankets to share about. Bring your own to take the responsibility away from your host and keep yourself warm while the fun goes on!

So there you have it, if you stick to all these tips you’ll be the perfect guest in no time!
