Whilst lots of brides plan for a summer wedding (gambling on the weather!), winter weddings are now becoming more popular. You can’t do anything about the weather, but you can add some winter sparkle and possibly a touch of Christmas into the mix as well. Here are our thoughts to help you with your plans.
- Location
You could pick somewhere where you can have log fires and Christmas trees dotted throughout the reception rooms, or you could have a marquee if you prefer (possibly without the roaring log fire!). Today’s powerful heaters can make winter marquees as warm as toast inside and hard flooring will protect you from waterlogged ground. Add lots of fairy lights and outdoor lighting to create a magical atmosphere and, if the weather is fine but cold, then fire pits outside for your hardier guests will help to extend your venue.
- Decoration
Winter colours and textiles can be rich and bold – reds, greens, golds and purples are all classic and winter warming. Pine cones make excellent natural decorations and can double up as place card holders. Add sprigs of holly to place cards and hang some strategically placed bunches of mistletoe around the venue to really set the romantic theme! Decorate reception rooms with candles, tea lights and fairy lights and add gold hurricane vases for a glamorous effect to each table. And of course, don’t forget to include a Christmas tree or two – perhaps the bridesmaids’ gifts or even your wedding favours could be placed underneath!
- Bouquets
Red roses, white roses, orchids or tulips – all give a crisp wintry feel, as well as sprigs of berries, holly and mistletoe. There are still lots of bold colourful flowers out in the winter but you can opt to have white or cream blooms combined with seasonal details such as pine cones, berries and lush dark green foliage if you prefer to have a contrast of colours and textures.
- Dress
Even though it’s winter, you can still have your dream off-the-shoulder dress; just add a wonderful snugly faux-fur wrap or cape. Some off-the-shoulder dresses still incorporate sleeves or, for a more vintage look, wear long white gloves instead. And don’t forget lots of crystal beading to give you added sparkle on what might be a dull wintry day.
- Food and drink
With a winter wedding, you don’t need an excuse to include your favourite Christmassy food and drink. A hearty roast will go down a treat and you can add glasses of mulled wine and cider to the list for those whose favourite tipple is NOT champagne! Why not have winter-themed cocktails, with flavours such as cranberry and butterscotch, or warming cups of hot chocolate and liqueur coffees? So much to choose from …
