Spring is just around the corner! And, with the warmer weather on its way, families will be wanting to spend more time in their gardens. But the winter months are often tough on our gardens, and there will be work to do to ensure that space is looking in tip-top shape!
So, to get you ready for spring, we wanted to share our top tips to spruce up your garden!
Have a good clear up
We’ve all been there… the leaves and twigs that fall in winter seem to be endless! But those months have passed, and new leaves are sprouting! So, before you even think about mowing the lawn, be sure to give your garden a rake to clear the way. This will also help to get rid of any dead grass, supporting new growth.
A simple tip to help nourish the soil…
Aeration is key for the health of your soil. So, be sure to make small holes in the grass to allow water to trickle down into the ground!
A garden fork can be used to prick holes that are approximately 12cm deep in the ground. Do this once in spring and once in summer. Then, water the ground frequently but sparsely.
Weeding
To create new growth, you need to get rid of the weeds. And, with spring just around the corner, it’s important to pull the weeds that have grown through winter. This will prevent them from spreading further.
Tend to the edges of your garden
Edging and maintaining your garden’s edges is key! Half-moon edgers and garden shears are great for these jobs. But if you’re struggling to get your hands on these tools, a pair of scissors will do the job quite often! You’re aiming to remove any grass that overlaps onto paths or flower beds.
Get planning!
Now for the exciting bit… it’s time to decide on the flowers, plants and hanging baskets that you want to display. Maybe you want to add a bird feeder or two to your garden space? This is the time to decide on what your garden will look like this year! Oh.. and whilst you’re planning, just have a check of your garden tools and your lawn mower. They’ve been in storage for a while and you’ll want to check they’re all in good working order, ready to be used!
