Can you believe that it’s December already? As mad as it is December is the month where we all over indulge and drink far more than any one person should over 31 days.
While we’re busy scoffing posh chocolates and cheeses, and have leftover turkey coming out of our ears, it’s easy to forget about all of the yummy produce December has to offer.
Here are Ellie’s top picks for what ingredients you should be cooking with this festive season:
Brussels Sprouts – We wouldn’t dare leave this glorious vegetable off this month’s list! Often given a bad rep due to terrible childhood memories the sprout is sometimes forgotten, however after a recent revamp top chefs are now embracing these home-grown beauties and giving them the much deserved TLC they should receive. I [Ellie] have mine thinly sliced, roasted and with a squeeze of fresh lime, perfect for adding a burst of freshness to your Christmas dinner.
Cranberries – Another Christmas must. Despite only having one cranberry farm in the UK they are found in abundance right up to Christmas day! To be honest I can give or take cranberry sauce, I like to use these little taste bombs in white chocolate cookies!
Guinea fowl – For an alternative to turkey this Christmas… only joking, don’t scrap the turkey, but guinea fowl is a great bird to feed a smaller family, just not on the big day! The meat is super lean and has a mild flavour so is a perfect introduction to game.
Cauliflower – You will see this on most restaurant menus for the next couple of months; it’s so versatile and can be used in soups, purées, as a (cheesy) side dish, made into cauli-rice and more!
Other ingredients to cook with this month…
- Clementine
- Celeriac
- Goose
- Oysters
- Quince
Whatever you are cooking with or eating this month have an absolutely brilliant Christmas and enjoy stuffing your face!
