The festive season is over, and not only have we run out of chocolate, but payday isn’t until another week and the weather is still as rubbish as ever. As if January couldn’t get any worse, Blue Monday (21st Jan) is on the way aka the most depressing day of the year, according to Sky Travel. If you don’t have the funds to be booking a holiday at the mo, take a look at our eight cost-friendly tips for perking yourself up this Blue Monday.

  1. Look at dogs
If you’re anything like our office and love dogs (pugs are our all-time fave), then why not have a cheeky Google or Instagram search for #cutedogs during your lunch break, or while the boss has slipped out to a meeting (we promise we won’t tell).

  2. Tuck into your favourite meal
If you’re working this Blue Monday, make sure you’ve planned a nice meal for yourself after work, whether it be a hearty shepherd’s pie or a succulent steak and chips. Tip: Prep your ingredients on the Sunday to make your life that little bit easier on Blue Monday. Or, if the thought of cooking makes you cry a little inside, swing by your local takeaway or restaurant.

  3. Have a laugh
Change into your pyjamas and snuggle up on the sofa with a cuppa when you get home from work. Watch your favourite comedian or comedy. There’s nothing quite like a belly laugh to cheer you up when you’re down. Crying tears of laughter is much better than hysterically sobbing your eyes out.

  4. Cut some shapes!
Put on your favourite song, grab your dancing shoes and bust out a few of your moves.

  5. Read a book
Pick up that book you bought a couple of weeks ago and still haven’t touched. Immerse yourself and escape to another world where Blue Monday doesn’t exist.

  6. Spend some quality time with your loved ones
Whether you’re eating as a family for the first time in forever, are huddling around the TV or are playing a game, spending time and socialising with your family is good for your mental health and will help to keep the blues at bay.

  7. Take a relaxing bath
Bubbles + candles + a glass of wine = the perfect recipe for a bit of well-deserved me time.
