Shabs was not prepared for the changes she experienced when she had her first baby. Shabs said: “Being a mum for the first time is daunting and you feel so vulnerable. At Amawrap our main aim is to help with advice about babywearing, to help mums feel like they are in control again. If we can help mums feel even a little bit more empowered, then we have done our job.”
Looking to her ancestry, where her family historically used slings to carry their babies, Shabs first fashioned her own baby wrap to help her get her out of her first-floor apartment and she credits the sling with helping her overcome her own postnatal depression. Due to local demand Shabs started selling slings to fellow mums and Amawrap was born.
Since the birth of the business, Amawrap baby slings have won multiple awards and are acknowledged as a ‘hip-healthy’ product by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute. The stylish slings are also beneficial for colic and reflux babies. Founded in 2012, Amawrap’s aim is to provide help, support and information to parents about the importance of skin-to-skin contact, which encourages the release of endorphins, including oxytocin.
